Help me buy a car, please

Please! I'm in research mode now, and while I'm a hella good researcher, I'm feeling out of my depth.

What I need:

My top priorities are reliability, safety and good gas mileage.
It has to seat at least five people, and have a reasonable amount of storage space.
It has to perform decently in winter conditions.

What I want:

A wagon or crossover. A sedan would be okay if the trunk space was good.
Automatic 5-speed.
Turbocharger (my previous car had this and I liked it) or good acceleration

What I don't want:

A minivan.
An SUV.

Recommendations? Vehicles/brands to avoid at all costs?

Happy stories? Horror stories?

Also, buying. We are considering both new and used. Have you had any experience with buying a certified pre-owned car from the dealer?
