Moving right along
Feb. 12th, 2011 05:07 pmThird time's the charm, I guess.
After having had to reschedule twice due to massive snowstorms, I finally managed to take my MIL to see a lawyer who specializes in elder law yesterday. He made some good suggestions, and between us we convinced her that yes, she can afford to, and definitely should, move into the assisted living place near us.
Today, I went over there to look at the available apartments and discuss what needs to be done to get her moved in. As I've said before, 90% of family life is logistics, and that's certainly true in this situation. Forms to fill out, checks to be written, movers to arrange for, packing, etc. We'll probably need to triage her current apartment and hire a storage facility for some of her stuff. I'm sure there are several dozen things I haven't thought of yet, and it's up to me to keep on top of everything and keep her informed without lettering her get overwhelmed.
Tomorrow's her birthday. We're hosting brunch, so she'll get a birthday party and a cake and cards, and I suspect even a small fuss will leave her exhausted. She was totally worn out after our meeting with the lawyer yesterday; there was a lot of information to take in. Any transition is hard, and since the ultimate goal is to reduce stress in her life, I need to make this as stress-free as possible for her.
I'm hoping to get this done within a month. Wish me luck.
