Left my bootstraps in my handbasket
Feb. 15th, 2011 05:27 pmI'm trying to pull myself up and out of the winter doldrums. I have heard that bootstraps are useful for such purposes, but I can't locate mine. Maybe I left mine in that handbasket, the one in which the whole world is on the way to Hell...
I blame the insidious creature I call the Depression Monster, which tends to nest under my eaves when the weather turns cold. How to drive it off? Perseverance. Coffee. Chocolate. Hugs. Lists, like this one:
Reasons to Be Cheerful and Things to Look Forward To
1. Skateapalooza, an annual event thrown by one of my dearest friends, is being held this Saturday. Get a bunch of women together to watch a pre-recorded figure skating competition while eating good food, drinking fabulous beverages, and making snarky remarks about the costumes, skaters and commentators. Abundant laughter is always on the menu.
2. El Son, my 16-year-old saxophone player, is putting together a small jazz ensemble to play at the school's "New Orleans Night." This is a voluntary endeavor, and they're planning to play Sing, Sing, Sing, written by Louis Prima and made famous by Benny Goodman in the '30s. This tune is made of energy and swing and sheer fun, and I'm proud of El Son for trying this.
3. Our anniversary is coming up, and we've made plans to go to the York Harbor Inn for the weekend. It's one of our favorite places in the world; we discovered it shortly after we got married and have been going back ever since. I booked us a room with a jacuzzi, fireplace, and ocean view. Guaranteed relaxation.
4. Planning a mani-pedi for tomorrow. I'm thinking metallics; maybe gold for the toes, copper for the fingers?
5. Poetry group tonight. This one's sort of a mixed bag, since I really haven't written much at all this month, and two foolish and shortsighted editors have recently declined the opportunity to publish my work. But I generally find this group to be a source of energy and inspiration, so it belongs on the list.
6. Every day, no matter how cold or gray or dismal, brings us one day closer to spring.
Onward! And if you hear anything growling under the eaves, poke it with a pointy stick for me.
